Westerhall Estate; formerly known as “BACCAYE ESTATE”; was purchased by Sir William Johnstone of Dumfriesshire, Scotland. The name Westerhall is believed to come from Sir William’s ancestral home in Dumfriesshire, and the name of the estate was duly changed to Westerhall. This occurred in the late 1700, of which the estate consisted of 951 acres planted in Sugar Cane, Cocoa and Limes.
In 1862 sugar cane processing machinery was purchased from the firm of W & A McOnie in Glasgow, and installed at Westerhall, most of which is still in existence.
Westerhall was sold on 21 November 1836, by the heir of Sir William, Sir Frederick George Johnstone to “Mr John Allan Powell of Lincolns Inn, Middlesex, Lewis Hoyes Esquire of the Island of Grenada, one of His Majesty’s West Indian or Caribbee Islands in America, and Thomas Browne of Snell Hall in the said Island”.
The estate was apparently sold by these gentlemen to Messrs. Felix Preudhomme and David Gibbs, and on 26 April 1876, Westerhall was sold by the commissioners for sale of encumbered estates in the West Indies to Mr Jonas Browne of 36 Mincing Lane, London for ₤2,500. On the same day, Mr.Browne also purchased Morne Delice and Baillies Bacolet Estates.
The next transaction which has been found is in 1900, when the estate was sold by Mrs Elizabeth Wells of Hampstead Estate in St. David to William Alexander Whiteman Ross for ₤1,000. Mr Ross made a down payment but never finalised the deal and the Registrar sold the estate for the outstanding balance to Mrs Ellice Emily Branch in 1912. Mrs.Branch, who lived in the UK in Pinner, put the estate into the hands of Mr John Arthur Branch of True Blue Estate with a very comprehensive Power of Attorney, and Mr Branch eventually sold Westerhall to Mr Arthur Keith Wells in 1944. In 1965 the estate was purchased by Mr George Williams and Mr John Otway, and became Westerhall Estate Limited. The shareholding of the Company has remained in the immediate Williams/Wells family.
Presently the major operation of the Company is the blending and bottling of rum. The company produces six brands, with its flagship brand being Westerhall Plantation Rum. Originally all the rum sold from the company was it bulk containers and cask. The first bottled product was Rum Sipper Strong Rum and this was introduced to the local market in 1974. The product grew steadily as the market accepted the convenience of purchasing rum in bottles rather than in bulk containers.
Ye Olde Mill Rum was another product that was introduced in the early 1980’s; bottled at a reduced strength of 60% Alc/Vol; but unfortunately it was not a success and was eventually discontinued. The Jack Iron Rum brand (bottled at 70% Alc/Vol) was launched in 1987. Westerhall Superb Light Rum a three year old (the first aged dark rum introduced by the company) was launched in 1988.
In 1989 Westerhall Plantation Rum was introduced. This brand was developed for export to the US market and has been sold in there since 1990; it is now available in thirty – eight states, including all the major markets. In 1999 White Jack strong Rum which was introduced to replace the Rum Sipper Strong Rum brand.
In 2008 the company introduced Westerhall Vintage Ten Year Old Rum (bottled at 40% Alc/Vol) for the more discerning connoisseur or individual who demands spirits that have been fully matured to perfection and the latest addition was 12 Degrees Rum (bottled at 40% Alc/Vol) in 2011 to appeal to the trendy youthful consumer.
